Furniture Series
Furniture in Mziwa wood
The signature piece of furniture on Zanzibar is a simple wooden chair made solely from locally sourced materials, without any form of transformation nor any use of chemicals. An entirely ecological product.
Local craftsmen have made the tried and tested chair the same way for generations, as has the artisan collective Jisamwe from Stone Town, with whom we are collaborating since the beginning of 2021, supported by our local manager Denis Bandoma.
What started out as a tweaking of their original model is now a complete series of furniture for local restaurants and hospitality as well as for private homes. The full Pemba Series is composed by coffee and dining tables, chairs and lounge chairs, bar stools and low stools.
It is the main source of income of the Jisamwe Collective and therefore a symbol of their livelihood.

The story
This video narrates Babled’s journey with the Jisamwe Collective, and was crafted for our fundraising campaign held in September 2021. The purpose was to raise awareness about the new project alongside the European community, which had already been supporting Babled’s design work.
The fundraiser aimed to facilitate the shipment of a container with chairs from Tanzania to Portugal, where the majority of Kukua’s team is located. The mission was successfully accomplished and the chairs are now spread across Europe, in the homes of supporters of this project with whom we wanted to share the first results.
Work in progress
These photos offer a glimpse behind the scenes of our ongoing project, featuring the skilled artisans Hassan Issa and Hassan Mselem, from the Jisamwe Collective, and our dedicated local manager Denis.
